Tracing Superior Late-Leafing Genotypes of Persian Walnut for Managing Late-Spring Frost in Walnut Orchards

چکیده
Evaluating genetic diversity in walnut (Juglans regia L.) populations is a rapid approach used by breeding programs to distinguish superior genotypes. The present study was conducted on the population of Hamedan Province, one richest and most genetically diverse regions Iran, during 2018–2019. After initial screening, 47 genotypes were selected for further evaluation pomological phenological traits based International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI) descriptors. Nut kernel weights among ranged from 7.15 21.05 g 3.0 10.8 g, respectively. Principal component analysis (PCA) categorized into three distinct groups. Whereas cluster (CA) revealed similarities dissimilarities identifying four major clusters. Spearman correlation showed positive (p < 0.01) between nut weight (NWT), size, (KW), while negative shell thickness (STH) packing tissue (PTT) with percentage (KP) observed. Lastly, 10 (TAL8, TAL9, TAL10, TAL14, TAL19, TAL22, TB2, TB4, TB6, RDGH5) considered superior. Superior late-leafing (25–40 days after standard) displayed lateral bearing (LB) habit heavy nuts (12.52–16.82 g) kernels (6.53–8.15 g), thin shells (1.06–1.25 mm), lightly colored kernels.

Characteristics of Almond Selections in Relation to Late Frost Spring
Almond is one of the most important nut crops in Iran. Due to the suitable climatic conditions, Iran is one of the most important growing centers for wild and domesticated species of almond in world. Native genotypes typically are early flowering, due to late spring frost, often; they have been damaged. So frost damage to the flowers and early developing fruits is one of the most limiting facto...
متن کاملPhenological and Pomological Characteristics of Five Promised Walnut Genotypes in Karaj, Iran
Late spring frost is one of the most important factors causing loss of production of the Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.). Therefore, the selection of spring frost tolerant genotypes has been among the most important priorities in the breeding programs during the recent years in Horticultural Science Research Institute, Karaj-Iran. After the spring frost in 2010, five superior genotypes (B10,...
متن کاملOrganic Weed Management in Walnut Orchards
Controlling weeds in organic farming systems requires the use of many techniques and strategies in order to achieve economically acceptable weed control and yields. Weeds can always be pulled or cut out, but the question is simply how much can a grower spend in terms of time and money to reduce weed pressure. The more a grower is able to reduce weed pressure (seed and perennial propagules) the ...
متن کاملEarly Selection of Improved Black Walnut Genotypes
Fine hardwood trees in the Central Hardwoods region of the United States are an important resource for the furniture, cabinetry, flooring, modular home, and paneling manufacturing industries. Consumers find wood from these trees to be very desirable because of quality factors such as grain, strength and color. To enhance wood production, tree improvement programs can address quantity and qualit...
متن کاملAssessment of Iranian Apricot Cultivars Resistant, Susceptible and Mutant to Late Spring Frost
Apricot is grown in a wide range of climatic conditions in Iran, however, it is frequently damaged by late spring frost. In this case, identification of new genotypes tolerant to cold stress is indispensably needed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic population and relationships among 27 apricot accessions (Prunus armeniaca) by 30 microsatellite markers and 11 morp...
